Call or book online to schedule your travel health consultation. We recommend booking 6–8 weeks before departure. We also offer same-day appointments for urgent travel needs.
A registered healthcare practitioner listed in the PGD will assess your travel plans and administer the vaccine according to the PGD. You'll receive your first Dukoral dose during this appointment.
Complete your second cholera vaccine dose at your follow-up appointment. Protection only begins 1 week after the final dose of the full course. It saves you against Vibrio cholerae O1 infection.
Cholera remains a serious threat in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It’s common in areas with poor water sanitation. If you’re travelling to high-risk destinations, the cholera vaccine is one of your most effective preventative measures.
Dukoral® protects against cholera infection (Vibrio cholerae O1). ETEC is a common cause of traveller’s diarrhoea. All consultations and vaccinations are delivered by our qualified pharmacist and travel health practitioners, with medicines supplied under a Patient Group Direction (PGD) following individual clinical assessment.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease spreads through contaminated water or food and causes severe, watery diarrhoea and rapid dehydration. Without prompt treatment, cholera can be fatal within hours.
The Dukoral vaccine provides protection against cholera and ETEC. It is the bacteria responsible for up to 40% of travellers’ diarrhoea cases.
Why vaccination matters:
Cholera can cause life-threatening dehydration within hours
One vaccine course defends against two common travel health threats
Critical protection for aid workers, volunteers, and travellers to endemic regions
Travel confidently knowing you’ve taken proactive steps to protect your health
Prevents serious illness in areas where medical facilities may be limited
The cholera vaccination is recommended for travellers visiting areas where cholera outbreaks are active or endemic. Our travel health specialists will assess your individual risk based on your destination, accommodation, length of stay, and activities. Booster requirements vary by age and time since completion of the initial course. Advice will be provided during your consultation in line with clinical guidance.
Many cholera infections are mild or asymptomatic, but severe cases progress rapidly and require immediate medical attention.
Symptoms typically appear 12 hours to 5 days after infection, most commonly within 2–3 days.
If you develop sudden, severe watery diarrhoea during or after travel to a cholera-endemic area, seek immediate medical attention. Always inform healthcare providers about your recent travel history.
Dukoral is generally well-tolerated. Most people experience no side effects at all. The oral vaccine requires no injection. Thus making it ideal for those with needle anxiety.
Our pharmacists, registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), have extensive training in travel medicine. We stay current with WHO and Public Health England guidance. That’s why our advice is evidence-based and tailored to your itinerary.
Your appointment includes thorough evaluation of your destination, season, accommodation, duration, and activities. You'll receive personalised advice on all necessary vaccinations, malaria prevention, and staying healthy abroad.
