How Our Travel Vaccination Service Works

Book an Appointment

You can call us or use our online booking system to schedule your travel health consultation. We recommend booking 6–8 weeks before departure for optimal protection timing. However same-day appointments are available when needed.

Attend Your Consultation

Our pharmacist will review your travel plans and medical history to ensure the vaccine suits you. Your first Hepatitis A dose can be given at this appointment. We'll discuss timing for other vaccines, offer travel health advice, and schedule your second dose in 6–12 months to complete the course.

Receive Your Vaccination

The Hepatitis A vaccine is administered intramuscularly in the deltoid (≥1 year) or anterolateral thigh (<1 year). The appointment takes approximately 15–20 minutes including post-vaccination observation. You'll receive written confirmation of your vaccination for your travel records.

What is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious viral infection. It attacks the liver, causing inflammation and potentially serious illness. The virus spreads primarily through contaminated food and water or direct contact with an infected person. Unlike Hepatitis B and C, Hepatitis A does not cause chronic liver disease. However acute infections can be severe and debilitating.

Hepatitis A infection is particularly common in destinations popular with British travellers, making the Hepatitis A vaccine one of the most frequently recommended travel vaccines.

How Hepatitis A spreads

High-risk destinations include

Importance of Hepatitis A Immunisation

The Hepatitis A vaccine provides high levels of protection against infection. A two-dose primary course provides long-term protection, with the second dose given 6–12 months after the first. For those at ongoing risk, a reinforcing dose is recommended at 25 years after the primary course.

Why Hepatitis A vaccination matters

Widespread risk

Hepatitis A is endemic in over 100 countries worldwide

Severe illness

The infection causes weeks of debilitating illness, often requiring hospitalisation

Lost travel time

Symptoms typically last 3–6 weeks, potentially ruining your entire trip

Age-related severity

Adults over 50 and those with underlying liver conditions face higher risks of complications

No specific treatment

There’s no cure for Hepatitis A; only prevention through vaccination is your best protection

Cost-effective

Vaccination is far less expensive than treating Hepatitis A infection abroad

Protects loved ones

Reduces risk of bringing the infection home to vulnerable family members

Unlike many travel health risks, Hepatitis A can affect even luxury travellers staying in high-end hotels. The virus spreads easily through contaminated food handling. Thus making vaccination essential regardless of your accommodation standard.

Who Should Get the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

Our pharmacists assess your individual risk based on your destination, activities, length of stay, and medical history. Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended under this service for individuals aged 1 year and over who are travelling to or residing in countries where Hepatitis A vaccination is currently recommended in accordance with NaTHNaC and TRAVAX national guidance.
