Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Septicaemia (blood poisoning) occurs when bacteria multiply in the bloodstream. It triggered a widespread inflammatory response. Both conditions can occur simultaneously or independently.
Meningococcal group B bacteria cause approximately 90% of meningococcal disease cases in children and 50–60% in adolescents and young adults in the UK. The infection strikes rapidly and can cause death or permanent disability within 24 hours of first symptoms appearing.
The MenB vaccine provides protection against the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK. Meningococcal B disease kills approximately 1 in 10 people infected. It leaves 1 in 5 survivors with permanent disabilities including brain damage, hearing loss, limb amputation, and organ failure.
Symptoms escalate from flu-like illness to critical condition within hours

Survivors face lifelong disabilities including deafness, epilepsy, learning difficulties, and scarring from tissue damage
Routine vaccination only covers specific age groups; private vaccination ensures comprehensive family protection

Protection during high-risk life stages (university, military service, gap years)
