About Dengue Vaccination

Dengue fever is one of the world’s fastest-growing mosquito-borne diseases. It affects millions of travellers and residents in tropical and subtropical regions each year. If you’re travelling to dengue-endemic areas, vaccination offers protection against this potentially serious disease.

At our Slough Travel Clinic, we provide Qdenga (TAK-003). It’s the latest dengue vaccine that protects against all four dengue virus serotypes. Our experienced pharmacists deliver tailored vaccination assessments, reviewing your previous dengue history and travel plans to determine whether vaccination is appropriate for you.

Dengue vaccination is particularly important for travellers to popular destinations in Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Because in these areas, dengue transmission occurs year-round and severe outbreaks are increasingly common.

What is Dengue?

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These day-biting mosquitoes are most active during early morning and before dusk. They thrive in urban and semi-urban environments where they breed in standing water.

The dengue virus exists in four serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4). Infection with one serotype provides lifelong immunity to that specific type but not to the others. Subsequent infections with different serotypes significantly increase the risk of severe dengue. It’s a potentially fatal complication involving plasma leakage, severe bleeding, and organ failure.

Dengue is now endemic in over 100 countries, with approximately 400 million infections occurring annually worldwide. Climate change and urbanisation continue to expand the geographical range of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Who Should Get the Dengue Vaccine in Slough?

In the UK, the Qdenga dengue vaccine is recommended only for individuals aged 4 years and over who have evidence of previous dengue infection and are either planning to travel to areas with a risk of dengue infection or are occupationally exposed to the dengue virus.

It is important to note that Qdenga is not currently recommended for seronegative individuals, meaning those with no evidence of previous dengue infection, because there is a theoretical risk of severe dengue if a seronegative person is vaccinated and later exposed to DENV-3 or DENV-4.

Symptoms of Dengue

Dengue fever symptoms range from mild illness to severe, life-threatening disease. Understanding the warning signs helps ensure prompt medical attention if infection occurs despite vaccination.

Classic Dengue Fever (Dengue Without Warning Signs)

Symptoms typically appear 4–10 days after an infected mosquito bite.

Classic dengue symptoms last 5–7 days, with recovery taking 1–2 weeks. Extreme fatigue may persist for several weeks after acute illness resolves.

Severe Dengue (Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever)
